In March 2016, we saw the release of Joomla 3.5 which brought us the host of new features. We might not be able to see the whole new features introduced with Joomla 3.5 in our naked eyes, but we just can’t deny the fact that it had a dramatic impact. For instance, the PHP 7 support brought great improvements on the site speed. Despite the success, the team is now ready for the next iteration that could bring some hefty changes to the platform.
Having said that Joomla 3.5 was quite heavy in terms of under the hood improvements, expectations about Joomla 3.7 is really high and tech savvy’s have already started predicting the new features that it can bring up. Well, the predictions say that Joomla 3.7 will be a minor and gloomy upgrade with some potential additions.
So, what features can we expect in Joomla 3.7?
1. Custom Fields
This will be an underlining feature if it’s included in Joomla 3.7. Yes, you’ll be able to add custom fields to your articles, contact forms and user profiles if the feature comes along with the next iteration. You’ll see two new tabs to your left while adding new articles; they are Fields and Field categories. The code for these fields is based on DPFields (a Joomla extension).
There are about 20 different options available for field in DPFields, and Joomla 3.7 is expected to have similar set of options.
Here is an expected overview of the fields we might see in Joomla 3.7: Article, Calendar, Checkboxes, Color, Captcha, Email, Editor, Integer, Image, Media, List, Radio buttons, SQL, Telephone, Textarea, Text, Timezone, URL, Usergroup, User, Yes or No, etc.
2. Flat Redesign for Admin Area
We have been seeing several tweaks in the admin area ever since the launch of Joomla 3, but we should say that this is the biggest overhaul. It looks like the plan is to completely modernize the admin template with flat design elements.
There are many people who aren’t happy about the new change in the admin template as their existing videos and pictures do not match the new template, and they’ll have to put new videos to match the new template. But they surely can’t deny that it’s a great design refresh.
3. Facebook Login
The new iteration is also expected to add Facebook authentication plugin, so that users can login to Joomla with their Facebook account. Joomla Core already has a Gmail version of it.
To make the Facebook authentication work, the team has come up with another useful change i.e. the authentication plugins can add their own fields to the login screens. It provides a standard process for any extension which needs single sign-in integration or social network authentication.
4. Configure TinyMCE features
If Joomla 3.7 comes up with this, the feature lets you customize the default editor. It allows you to open the TinyMCE editor plugin to add, remove or move buttons.
5. Add Articles with Menu Links
Adding articles with menu links helps you by removing several steps from Joomla site building process. You will be able to create an article easily while adding a menu link.
6. New Date and Time Picker
When compared to the above features, this is relatively a minor one; one proposed change will update Date and Time picker in Joomla.
Joomla being an acknowledged CMS among the users, there are numerous developers who prefer Joomla to build stunning websites because of its great features. Upon that, the new version is considered to be more matured by developers end. Few sources have also mentioned the release date of Joomla 3.7. If everything goes well, it’s expected to be released on March 28th 2017.
