WordPress Rejoices 10 Years

17 June 2013

Dublin: On the 27th May 2013, WordPress celebrated its 10th birthday. From modest beginnings in 2003 comprising two co-founders, this web software has grown into a huge global community of contributors (260 at last count), users, developers and testers.

According to its co-founder, Mike Little, WordPress is a free open source Content Management System (CMS) which is used to run 18% of the world’s web sites, adding up to around 70 million sites.

The victory and reach of WordPress CMS cannot be understated. It has spawn an industry of website designers, developers, testers and trainers all dedicated on developing WordPress into something that could not have been imagined a decade ago.

At present, tens of thousands of businesses, both big and small, rely on WordPress for a reason. The WordPress community gives a great deal of backup and support. Hundreds of people help on the support forums and many people contribute to groups on Linked In and Q&A sites like WordPress Answers.

Surf Coast News is a case in point. When first published in September 2010, after much testing and research, WordPress was picked as the Content Management System. Evidently the price was right, but more prominently it offered a better designed and more flexible back end than many of its overpriced competitors. However, the thing that settled the deal was the sizable WordPress community that all seemed to be working, many for free, with the sole aim of making WordPress better.
